  • Because it’s Shark Week, I bring you: Shark Skin.
The texture of shark skin is comprised of tiny scales or plates, called dermal denticles. Which is the coolest name ever. The structure of the denticles create tiny vertices in the water, reducing drag, turbulence, and noise. (Remember the controversial Fastskin suit at the Olympics?) The denticles also complete another amazing feat, they’re anti-bacterial! Independent of chemical composition the physical structure of the denticles prevents bacterial growth. This has been researched by Dr. Shiravnthi Reddy and developed into a product called Sharklet, which is being used in surface protection, boat hulls, and medical devices.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and nature has so much worth copying. For more about the properties of Sharklet and its natural source of inspiration check out the Biomimicy Institute’s - Ask Nature
Hope everyone had an excellent Shark Week! Didn’t watch any shows, but I am headed to the beach tomorrow. Also, a small public service announcement: more people are killed by pig attacks than shark attacks annually; let us respect and protect our shark-tastic friends.
